Driving Day 4 Viljandi to Voru (via Latvia)

Today we left beautiful Viljandi to continue around Estonia. We headed North to go around the big lake, and stopped next to the road to join one of the many bog walks in Eesti. This one was fairly new it seemed, with two boards to walk on, not cracked and covered with water! (Keep reading….) We walked through the little forest to a lookout point before heading back to the car to keep driving. Today we had to reach the South and still had some driving to do.

We followed the lake around and took off on a dirt road to see a windmill and old farm house. We drove down a little lane behind the farm (which we thought was the way to the windmill!) and decided to turn around when we saw lots of abandoned cars along with a really bad smell! It was a little too spooky even for us! We left the farm and saw that we had driven straight past the windmill…We kept driving to Valga & Voru – towns close to the Latvian Border (1/2 of Valga is on the Latvian side!). We didn’t think we could get in through the border crossing, so we followed the road along the border until we saw an unwatched post, and jumped across – took a photo, made a joke about the grasshopper plague in Latvia, did a little dance and jumped back! It was our 14th country! We kept driving (mostly in reverse because we kept wanting to take photos of the incredible forests!) and eventually reached Voru. We found a little sports camp where we ‘camped’ in a heated wooden hut with a bed & TV! Because no one was there anymore (summer being over) we had full use of the kitchen and rec facilities! We watched the Swans on the lake nearby and slept really well that night!!
