Innsbruck Alpen Zoo and stuck in a cable car

On our next day in Innsbruck, we took our super-cards to the Alpen Zoo - the highest altitude zoo in the world. They had tonnes of weird and wonderful animals, many of them local to the alps in the area. These included a crazy rare albino squirrel thing, that hopped around faster than the energizer bunny! They had a brown bear who sat on a slimy rock in the river while fish swum around him, and a lovely old vulture who came to the fence and lied down in front of us for some company - but he would have eaten our fingers if we let him.

We took our supercards again to a cable car up the Nordketten Ranges. We went late in the afternoon, and almost got to go on our own but ended up sharing the car with 8 or so other people. Lucky we weren't alone - about 1600m high the cable car jolted to a stop. Even luckier, we had a worker in the car who phoned in and told us it was a 'software problem'. They would phone him when it was fixed......after half an hour of swinging in the breeze, hovering above the trees and watching mountain bikes scream down the mountain below us, the car started moving - but only at a safety backup pace. The 20 min cable car ride took us over and hour and 10 minutes to get to the top!

After reaching the safety platform at the top, we had to get into a second cable car to get to the peak......not everyone was sure about it!! We got there safely & hiked up to the high point of the mountain. There we saw down into Innsbruck and far into the alps. There was wild mountain sheep and even snow!

I was up very early this morning to take Toni to the train (you remember Danielle - the 6.12am from Mittagong) and what a lovely surprise to be able to look at these great photos with a cup of coffee and a piece of toast. xxKaili
PS On first view of the cable car I thought you were in a helicopter!
